The newly appointed Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, has articulated his vision for leveraging ICT technology to address Ghana’s underdevelopment and empower its citizens.

In an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer emphasized his passion for bridging the digital divide and ensuring that the benefits of electronic communication reach all corners of the country.

Dr. Rashid Tanko highlighted the importance of enhancing digital literacy through the establishment and strengthening of Community Information Centers (CICs). These centers, he explained, will serve as hubs for teaching basic IT skills, empowering individuals to utilize devices like phones, laptops, and desktop computers effectively.

He believes that by equipping Ghanaians with these skills, they can unlock new opportunities and participate more fully in the digital economy.

Acknowledging the challenges in extending electronic communication penetration, Dr. Rashid Tanko pointed out that many communities remain underserved or unserved.

He cited examples where even within cities like Tamale, network coverage can be spotty, leaving residents without access to essential services. To address this, GIFEC plans to collaborate with telecom groups to expand network infrastructure and improve connectivity in these areas.

He also addressed the issue of funding, admitting that GIFEC faces challenges in meeting its objectives due to limited resources. He stressed the need for innovative approaches and partnerships to overcome these constraints and ensure that resources are allocated effectively to reach the most underserved communities.

In addition to his focus on digital empowerment, Dr. Rashid Tanko touched on the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.

He commended President John Dramani Mahama’s call for asset declaration by appointees, emphasizing that it is the right thing to do and helps to prevent societal pressures that can lead to corruption. He encouraged all appointees to mirror the President’s lifestyle by opening their doors to the public and providing accessible services.

Dr. Rashid Tanko’s appointment comes at a time when digital skills and technological advancement are increasingly crucial for economic growth and development.

With his passion for ICT and his vision for a digitally inclusive Ghana, he is poised to lead GIFEC in its mission to bridge the digital divide and empower communities across the country.
