Former member of the Council of State Gifty Afenyi Dadzie was among 182 newly qualified Lawyers who were called to the BAR in Accra.
The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo who doubles as the Chair of the Ghana Legal Counsel urged the newly qualified lawyers to contribute to the development of society.
She emphasized that much is expected of them and they must do all it takes to live up to expectations.
The Chief Justice reminded them of their core values, which include integrity, and upholding the rule of law.
She asked them to pay attention to the rapid growth of technology which is shaping how the law is being applied globally.
She said, “The hitherto seemingly resilient doctrine of sovereignty of nations that dominated in the history of nations in the last century and after the first world war is now being challenged with wars, ethnic upheavals and many others. Just when it seize, that democracy as a form of governance had settled down after colonialism, a different wave is sweeping across the nations. What does it mean for governance of contemporary developing nations like ours,” she asked.
Justice Torkornoo further stated that, “with such changes in governance across the globe, what then can lawyers contribute to the stability and prosperity of our country and community”,
“How we’ll do we understand technology and the demands of our society that affect the landscape of our legal world”, she emphasized.
Justice Torkornoo noted that, the world is faced with unprecedented challenges such as global warming, and climate change which require the knowledge, resilience, and understanding of the legal community on how to translate the knowledge gained in legal norms learnt in Constitutional law, Criminal law, Intellectual property, and others, and apply them to the fast situation of human interaction with technology and the environment.
However, Mrs Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie in an interview with GBC News said she embarked on this journey, to enhance her contribution to safeguarding the Ghanaian democracy. She recounted her journey to inspire many.
“I want to encourage everyone not to back off. When you think of failing, persevere and God will see your through,” she expressed.
