Immigration officials in the Northern Region (N/R) have repatriated hundreds of foreigners who attempted to cross into country since the closure of the borders.
The Northern Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Edward Kofi Owusu revealed this at the opening ceremony of a three-day training workshop in Tamale.
Organized by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and funded by the European Union and the International Organization for Migration, it was meant to build the capacity of personnel on issues relating to the fight against irregular migration.
ACI Owusu said the GIS on a weekly basis has been returning an average of 50 foreigners back to their home countries.
He explained that most of the foreigners entered Ghana through unapproved routes since the emergence of the coronavirus disease.
According to him, about 90 percent of the foreigners come from Niger, Burkina Faso or other neighbouring countries.
He noted that most of the foreigners were being assisted into the country by citizens.
He, therefore, cautioned against the practice, saying his outfit would not hesitate to deal with such citizens.
