Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President Albert Dwumfuor has urged the release of Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested for demonstrating.

Speaking at the 28th GJA Awards, Dwumfuor emphasized that remanding the protesters for two weeks is excessive and undermines human rights protection.

“Our constitution mandates us to safeguard citizens’ human rights, and as president, I will champion this cause,” Dwumfuor stated. “We join calls on the government, police, and judiciary to secure the protesters’ immediate release.”

Dwumfuor also commended Ghanaian journalists: “Your outstanding work embodies the spirit of excellence our association upholds. Your commitment to storytelling, investigative reporting, and media innovation inspires us all.”

He acknowledged journalists who risk their lives to expose wrongdoing and highlight the plight of vulnerable communities.

Additionally, Dwumfuor praised the Ghana Police Service for demonstrating professionalism and restraint during the recent three-day anti-galamsey protest.
