The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has assured the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, of its unwavering support for his vision to transform the mining industry.

In a statement issued in Accra yesterday and signed by its General Secretary, Godwin Nickleson Amarh, GNASSM noted that the Minister’s vision strongly aligns with the Association’s goals of promoting sustainable mining practices in Ghana. The Association pledged its full support to help the Minister achieve this vision.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Mr. Buah outlined his vision for the mining industry, focusing on combating illegal mining and promoting sustainable practices. His approach centers on three key areas: Community Engagement, Decentralization of the Mining Licensing Regime, and the Repeal of L.I. 2462.

These pillars align with GNASSM’s advocacy efforts to rid the industry of illegal miners, commonly referred to as “galamseyers.” The Association expressed optimism that Mr. Buah’s experience in managing public portfolios in the extractive industry will prove invaluable, particularly in addressing illegal mining and promoting responsible and sustainable practices that safeguard livelihoods and protect the environment.

The statement welcomed the Minister as he assumes a leading role in reforming the mining industry, a critical sector anchoring Ghana’s economy. GNASSM added that it stands ready to partner with him and his office to realize his vision.
