Former Attorney-General Godfred Dame has criticized a press conference held by Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine, calling it a rushed response to public concerns.
The press conference, which took place on February 14, was meant to explain why criminal cases against former officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government were dropped. However, Mr. Dame believes it was a move to justify shielding these officials from accountability.
He accused the government of trying to protect former NDC appointees by discontinuing cases against them. “The Attorney-General’s press conference was a knee-jerk reaction to the genuine concerns raised by Ghanaians. This government is attempting to clear its former officials of wrongdoing,” he stated.
Mr. Dame further alleged that the government’s actions were part of a bigger plan to grant immunity to its allies. He said that President Mahama, through the Attorney-General, was acting as a “clearing agent” to free individuals who had been charged with crimes.
He warned that this move could weaken Ghana’s democracy by making political loyalty more important than accountability. Despite this, Mr. Dame expressed confidence that Ghanaians would recognize the government’s real motives.
“I believe Ghanaians are discerning enough to see through this,” he added.
