The Medical Superintendent of the Suntreso Government Hospital in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti region, Dr. Agyarko Poku, says even though government has a reason for directing public hospitals to pay for their electricity consumption, the matter needs further consultation with key stakeholders.
This, he said, will ensure that access to quality and equitable healthcare delivery in the country is not compromised in any way based on cost.
Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Dr. Poku noted that, if the directive is implemented, some critical healthcare services would have to be reconsidered.
According to him, some of the facilities already need about five years to offset their indebtedness to the power producer due to low revenue generation.
Suggesting a way forward, the Suntreso Government Hospital’s Medical Superintendent said some aspects of hospital functions, such as mortuary, could be commercialised to generate more funds.
