Government reiterates commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies

President Akufo-Addo has reiterated government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies.

In line with this, government is continuing its relentless war on illegal mining and farming on river banks and other activities that pollute water bodies.

President Akufo-Addo made the point during a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of a Water Supply System for the Wenchi Municipality at the Jubilee Park in Wenchi.

This formed part of activities lined up for the second and final day of his Bono Regional Tour.

The Wenchi Water Supply System Project, valued at 30 Million Euro is to be executed by a Belgian firm, ASPAC International.

The system will harvest water from the Tain River through an intake facility into a water treatment plant.

The system will also include a booster station and a system of storage tanks and 13 kilometres of piping to Wenchi, Awisa, Wurompo, Droboso and Yoyoana among others for the over 90,000 population of the Wenchi Municipality.

The Sod Cutting ceremony was witnessed by a huge crowd including Chiefs and New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters.

Addressing the gathering, President Akufo-Addo said he is happy that the war against galamsey is paying of with water bodies becoming cleaner and ready to be tapped to produce more potable water for the Country.

The President further said the current Wenchi Small Towns Water System, which was constructed by the Kufour Administration in 2002 is based on mechanized boreholes and is no longer adequate for Wenchi, hence the need for a new system.

Earlier, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company, Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, briefed the gathering about the new water system to be constructed and called on the people of the area to help protect it to ensure its longevity.

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah also said the main aim of the President is to equitably distribute development across the Country.

She also said thanks to the fight against Illegal mining, Rivers like the Ankobra, Tano and Praare becoming cleaner.

Still in the Wenchi Municipality, the President was at the Koase SHTS to inspect projects being executed under the Senior High Schools Intervention Project.

The Projects include dining and Assembly Halls, Classroom blocks, Dormitories, Science Block, Administration Block and Accommodation for Teachers among others.

Another Sod cutting was also performed by the President at Droboso near Wenchi for the Droboso-Agubie-Badu Road.

The President also inspected work on the Odumase-Kwatire-Adantia-Badu Road, which links Sunyani West and Tain Districts and attended a durbar in his honour at Odumase, the Sunyani West District Capital.

Earlier in the morning, the President joined the Management of Zoomlion to cut sod for the construction of a Waste Treatment Facility at Nanketewa near Nwawasua in the Sunyani Municipality.

It will serve all the 12 districts in the Bono Region.
