Government urged to carefully weigh IPPs proposal to manage ECG

Government is looking for another private concessionaire to manage Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to improve its operations.

One year after government terminated its agreement with Power Distribution Services over allegations of fraud, some Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have expressed interest in managing ECG.

Energy Expert, Dr. Yussif Suleimana, has emphasized the need for government to put high premium on a guaranteed maximum efficiency in the running of ECG as it considers the proposal from the IPPs to manage it.

He said offering the company to the IPPs has some benefits and disadvantages which must be weighed on the scale of efficiency and value for money. He believes the ability of a new concessionaire to ensure efficiency in the operation of ECG should be key.

He spoke about benefits and disadvantages in offering ECG to the IPPs to operate.
