The Government is being urged to invest in the offtake of the country’s natural gas from the reserves to enhance power generation and industrialisation.

A Petrochemical Engineer, Dr. Yussif Suleimana said it is not in the interest of the country to continue to import natural gas when it has trillions of cubic feet in its reserves.

Dr. Suleimana was speaking with GBCNEWS in Accra.

Ghana started producing crude oil and natural gas in commercial quantities in 2011 though the commissioning of the Jubilee field was in December 2010. Flaring of gas was a common feature during the initial production stage, because there were no facilities to offtake the gas.

It took the country some time to set up the Ghana National Gas Company to process gas from the oil fields. Even with a Gas processing plant in place, the country is yet to fully take advantage of its gas reserves.

A Petrochemical Engineer Dr. Yussif Suleimana said it is out of place for the country to continue to import natural gas when it has trillions of cubic feet in its reserves.

Dr. Suleimana underscored the importance of optimising the nation’s gas resources.

Cheap electricity, experts say, is key to industrialisation. It is the hope of many in the petroleum sector that the country will fully utilise its gas resources for the benefit of its people.
