The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, says Management will very soon launch the 2nd Phase of its vision to transform the Corporation ‘from Bureaucracy to Business’ towards generating substantial funds internally to invest in the Public Broadcaster’s operations.

In this regard, GTV SPORTS+ and the LifeStyle (LS) Channels on GBC’s digital platform are to become fully Commercial Channels to generate revenue for the Corporation.

This decision, Professor Amin-Alhassan emphasized, is within the legal mandate of the GBC to commercialize part of its operations alongside its Public Service role.

Professor Amin Alhassan made this known in Kumasi at the official opening of this year’s Meeting of the Divisional Executive Committee of the Public Service Workers Union.

The two-day meeting of the Divisional Executives Committee of the GBC’s Division of the Public Services Workers Union is being attended by the Divisional Executives and the Regional Chairmen or their representatives.

The Union Executives will take stock of activities of the Divisional Union over the past year, plan for the rest of this year and discuss pertinent issues affecting staff and Union-Management relations after which a Resolution is to be passed for the attention and consideration of all the stakeholders for the improved working environment and productivity at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, the Director of Human Resources, John Korasare, and some national executive officers of the PSWU.

The Detector General of the GBC, Prof. Amin Alhassan, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the first phase of the new direction to transform the Corporation ‘from Bureaucracy to Business’. He said both GTV SPORTS + and LifeStyle Channels will have their respective Channel Managers replaced with Business Development Officers whose mandate will be to run the Channels as purely business entities to generate more revenue.

Prof. Amin Alhassan said apart from the payment of emolument of the staff by the government, the Corporation for some years now has been funding operations, despite insufficient internally generated revenue.

He said, unlike the pure bureaucratic environment in which staff almost always insist on certain benefits, ‘every worker of the Corporation must now justify his or her salary.’

The Director-General reminded the staff that their primary responsibility is to the GBC and warned that henceforth, ”Management will sanction any Unionist who hides behind the Union to shirk their official duties”.

”Management is however ready to work closely with the Union to ensure a congenial and harmonious working environment for improved productivity”, he said.

The Divisional Chairman of the Union, Sam Nat Kevor, said the Meeting will consider charting a way forward for a cordial working relation between the Union and Management for better work output.

The General Secretary of the PSWU, Bernard Adjei, commended the Management for the transformation agenda to improve internally generated revenue for investment in the Corporation and the welfare of the staff.

He called for an improved mutual trust and respect among the stakeholders for a harmonious working environment.
