Management of Ghana Water Company Limited will this morning begin spilling of excess water from the Weija dam.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chief Manager and Head of PR and Communications Stanley Martey.
The statement noted that the spillage has become necessary because of the sudden rise in the level of the dam from 46-point-2 feet to 48-point-1 feet within a 24-hour period.
The safe operating level of the Weija Dam is 47 feet, however, the level has risen to 48.1 feet within a day, thereby prompting the spillage.
Management has informed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), National Security, National Investigation Bureau, Chiefs, District Assembly, opinion leaders and all stakeholders downstream the dam to be in readiness or evacuate the area to avoid any eventuality. By this statement, the public as well as institutions and organizations who have properties downstream are being asked to relocate to avoid any danger.
Affected communities include; Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, Director of Communications at NADMO, George Ayisi, has described as unfortunate, the persistence of some residents within the Weija Dam catchment area, not to relocate for a smooth take off of today’s spillage.
He noted that adequate sensitization on the exercise has been carried out and was worried not much attention has been paid to it by some residents.
Mr. Ayisi speaking in an interview with GBC NEWS said NADMO will make an assessment after the exercise to provide residents with the necessary support.
