The High Court in Accra resumed proceedings on Thursday in the case involving Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson, despite his absence.
The court directed the legislator to either attend in person or join virtually on November 9, following his failure to appear on the previously adjourned date.
Accused of perjury, Gyakye Quayson faced the possibility of the trial continuing in his absence if he did not comply with the court’s directives.
Justice Mary Yanzuh, the presiding judge, had emphasized that the accused lacked a reasonable basis for his non-attendance.
However, when the case was called on Thursday, Gyakye Quayson’s legal team, led by Tsatsu Tsikata, informed the court that the MP was in Canada for medical tests and necessary treatment.
“The accused person is in Canada for medical tests and the requisite treatment arising from those tests,” Tsatsu Tsikata explained during the court proceedings.
