The new Maternal and Child Block being constructed at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi is progressing steadily after it has been established that an uncompleted one abandoned for 45 years had become weak.
The new six-storey structure is expected to be ready in 2024.
The Health Minister, Mr. Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has paid visit to the project site to inspect ongoing construction works.
The Health Minister, Mr. Kwaku Agyemang Manu was led on a guided tour by officials of Contracta, the Brazilian firm constructing the new Maternal and Child Block at the Komdo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Civil construction works are 75 per cent complete.
The Contractors, however, say the total work done on the project is 15 per cent, as they race to complete it by 2024. The cost of the project is 138.5 million euros.
The state-of-the-art facility, when completed will have paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics and intensive care units. Also available will be a high dependency unit, isolation rooms and student lecture halls, with the capacity to provide catering services for staff, patients and students.
The Architect and Lead Consultant, Mr. Nana Abu Bonsra negotiations are ongoing to relocate residents within the proximity of the construction site, particularly on the premises of the Ghana Armed Forces adjacent the under-construction block, to avoid the risk of an accident as it rises to higher floors.
He emphasized that the decision to demolish the old block followed a comprehensive risk assessment undertaken by relevant engineering companies, including Architectural and Engineering Services Limited.
