Hundreds of people in communities in Keta and Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have been rendered homeless after tidal waves swept through their homes on Sunday, November 7, 2021.
Communities such as Abutiakope, Kedzikope and Keta in the Keta Municipality and Blekusu in the Ketu South Municipality are largely affected as affected homeless residents are left with nothing to salvage.
The situation is reported to have brought economic activities there to a halt. The water has also taken over the road linking Keta and Aflao. The National Disaster Management Organization NADMO is in the area to assess the extent of damage.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Emmanuel Gemega, wants immediate support for affected residents.
”This morning I received a distressed call from an electorate. Basically, he said the sea water has ravaged their homes and because of that I called my Officers then we came to the scene to assess the extent of damage. And you can see that the sea water has entered their room and they have been dislodged so this has affected about three electoral areas around the Coast within the Municipality. And it is a very serious situation that we have experienced over the years though we know it is a perennial situation, this year, it has been delayed so we were not expecting it to happen again”.
”We call on help from anybody from the government and from individuals Philanthropist the NGOs, because the people have been dislodged from their rooms and the economic activities have been disrupted”, according to the Municipal Chief Executive of Keta Municipality, Emmanuel Gemega.
