A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Kwesi Jonah is advocating state funding for Civil Society Organizations in view of dwindling donor support.
He said that as international development partners and donor agencies are gradually cutting off funding to CSOs, African Governments must create funding support for their local CSOs.
He said in most advanced democracies such as the United States and Denmark, Governments provide funding support to CSOs, adding that African governments could do same; and ensure that a body is set-up to regulate the disbursement and utilization of such funds.
Mr. Jonah made the appeal at a dissemination workshop on the Ghana CSO Sustainability 2019 Index Report in Accra.
The Index is a tool created by USAID to study the strength and overall viability of the CSO sectors in countries of operation.
Mr. Jonah said the major challenge facing most CSOs in Ghana is funding. He said if the money from donors is cut off, that will be the end of most CSOs in the country.
