The Chief of Party of USAID, Strengthening the Care Continuum Project, Dr. Henry Nagai says the lack of HIV and AIDS campaign for some years now has contributed to the rise in infections of HIV.
He said many awareness and prevention campaigns carried out in 2000 made a lot of people conscious of their HIV status.
Dr Nagai in an interview with GBC’s Kingsley Obeng-Kyereh said there is the need to take advantage of social media and start a massive awareness campaign on the condition again.
Meanwhile, the Director of Technical Services of the Ghana Aids Commission, Dr. Fred Nana Poku says the major cause of increasing new HIV infections is that people no longer adhere to preventive and protective measures against the virus.
He also noted that others who have been affected are not following proper treatment procedures.
Today marks the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day which is marked on first December every year.
Since 1988, the AIDS response has made significant progress and today millions of people living with HIV are leading healthy and productive lives.
Inspite of these strides, Ghana still has a long way to go, as the latest UNAIDS report estimates that more than nine point four million people living with HIV still do not know their status.
World AIDS Day 2018 seeks to highlight the need for people to freely go for testing.
