Country Director of UNESCO, Abdourahamane Diallo, says young people can be meaningfully involved in disaster risk reduction processes when their capacity to do so is developed and strengthened.
He noted that such capacity can be built through activities that encourage learning such as quiz competitions and also involving them in awareness campaigns.
Mr. Diallo made the remarks at the special edition of the ‘What Do You Know’ quiz to commemorate this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The day serves as an opportunity to acknowledge progress made towards disaster risk reduction, loss of lives, livelihood and health by the UN.
Mr. Diallo noted that UNESCO recognises that education is fundamental to building a culture of safety and disaster-resilient communities and as such supports the “What Do You Know” quiz.
The Director of NADMO, Eric Nana Agyeman Prempeh said it is important that disaster reduction activities and education are inculcated in the youth at an early age.
In all, four schools participated. They were Tepa, Bolgatanga, Sammo and Serwaa Nyarko Senior High Schools.
At the end of the competition, Tepa SHS came first followed by Sammo SHS. Serwaa Nyarko and Bolgatanga SHS’s placed third and fourth.
