Ghana was awarded the best country in Africa on the 2018 World Press Freedom Index.
Globally, Ghana ranked 23.
But the spate of assaults on journalists and the latest murder of Investigative Journalist, Ahmed Hussein Suale, makes the country’s rating’s shaky.
Reacting to this concern, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, Affail Monney, said it is likely that the turn of events weeks into the year will immensely affect Ghana’s Press Freedom Ratings.
Expressing his disgust at Ahmed Suale’s gruesome murder, Mr. Monney said he is a hero even in death and must be accorded the utmost respect.
He encouraged Journalists not to be in despair over the incident.
But rather highly security conscious and professional in the discharge of their duties.
Mr. Monney charged the Police to ensure that perpetrators of the dastardly act are brought to book.
While sympathising with the bereaved family, Mr. Monney said the GJA will provide financial support to the late Journalist’s funeral and family.
