The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has urged residents and municipal authorities to ensure the proper maintenance of the newly inaugurated Flower Pot Interchange to preserve its functionality and aesthetics.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Titus-Glover stressed the importance of maintaining order and cleanliness around the interchange.
He particularly cautioned against the proliferation of kiosks and containers, which he warned could undermine the visual appeal and efficiency of the infrastructure.
“We also share the responsibility to maintain and use these resources wisely. In this light, I would like to urge the municipal assemblies, particularly Ledzokuku, and Ayawaso West Wuogon, under whose jurisdiction this interchange falls, to ensure that this area is kept clean.
“Additionally, I don’t want to see kiosks, and containers littered around. It will destroy the beauty that we are witnessing and commissioning today,” he stated.
The Flower Pot Interchange is a major infrastructure milestone aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the Greater Accra Region. It will facilitate smoother travel between key areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, significantly improving commuting experiences for residents.
The project includes several noteworthy features:
An 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct surfaced with asphalt.
A 140-meter ramp from Shiashie leading to Airport Hills.
An 80-meter ramp linking the viaduct to the Tema-bound Motorway.
A new road through the old East Legon tunnel and a 200-meter link from Cantonments via the Giffard Road interchange.
A redesigned Flower Pot roundabout with pedestrian walkways, streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals.
The interchange, constructed at a cost of GH¢677,839,999.5, was undertaken by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd, with Deoke Consult Ltd serving as the project consultant. Launched on March 7, 2017, the project was completed over a span of 93 months with funding from AfreximBank and the Government of Ghana.
