The Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, says Komenda Sugar Factory which has been inactive for many years needs immediate attention to be operational.
Speaking at her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22, she emphasized the importance of reviving the factory to reduce Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported sugar, which costs the country about $500 million annually.
Ofosu-Adjare identified the lack of raw materials and missing parts as major reasons for the factory’s closure. She revealed that funds had been allocated to address these challenges but stressed the need for a thorough assessment of the factory’s current state.
“I have been told the factory is not operational due to a lack of raw materials and some missing parts. Once I take office, I will work with the relevant ministries to evaluate the factory’s health and ensure it becomes a valuable asset for Ghanaians,” she said.
The Komenda Sugar Factory was established to support local sugar production and reduce imports, but its closure has left many disappointed. Ofosu-Adjare is committed to ensuring the factory is restored to its full potential to benefit the nation.
