An Administrator at the Kpedze Polyclinic in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, Mr Bernard Ayivor is appealing to the District Health Directorate of the region and government to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for health personnel of the facility amid the coronavirus outbreak in Ghana.
Making the appeal in an interview with GBCGHANAONLINE, Mr. Ayivor said frontline health workers who are at the forefront in the fight against coronavirus are at a high risk of contracting the disease. However, health workers at the facility numbering about 50, are yet to be provided with PPE.
According to him, though the region has not recorded any confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, it is prudent for the Polyclinic to prepare adequately to handle the situation in case there is an outbreak.
On measures taken by the Polyclinic to protect its staff and clients, he noted that a Veronica bucket and soap has been placed at a vantage point to encourage regular hand washing under running water.
He added that a staff of the Polyclinic has also been provided with one PPE to help check incoming visitors at the entrance, after which they are directed to wash their hands with soap at a locally designed tippy tap point located at the entrance of the facility. Mr. Ayivor, however, said this is not enough.
He said the Polyclinic is the main health facility in the District, and therefore if health workers are not assisted with PPE, an outbreak would be disastrous.
The Volta Region has not recorded any confirmed coronavirus case after all 17 suspected cases tested negative at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
