Lawyers for the Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson have filed contempt application at the Accra High Court against the Minister for Trade and Industry KT Hammond for allegedly making prejudicial comments on the ongoing trial of Mr Gyakye Quayson.

According to the Lawyers, on July 4, 2023, KT Hammond stated on a television station that the Assin North MP is guilty of the charges against him and would go to prison.

The Lawyers claim that the statement is extremely prejudicial and in contempt of Court.

They also argue that the comment undermines the judicial process and has the tendency of bringing it into disrepute.

They also contend that the comments are a violation of the right of Mr Gyakye Quayson who is presumed innocent until proven guilty as well as his right to a fair trial.

In view of these, the Lawyers are urging the Court to commit KT Hammond for contempt of Court.

The application will be moved on July 19, 2023.

Mr Gyakye Quayson is standing trial for his alleged dual nationality when he contested the Parliamentary elections in 2020.

Mr Quayson has been charged with criminal offences such as perjury.

Mr. Quayson is expected in Court July 11, 2023 for a determination of his application to Stay Proceedings at the High Court pending an appeal at the Court of Appeal.
