The Kumasi Central Market storey building will be demolished by Friday to make way for the commencement of the second phase of the Kumasi City Market Project.
The building and an alley leading to Dr Mensah, a popular spot near the Central Market, were barricaded last Saturday.
The Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Central Market, Mr Daniel Ankomah, had earlier informed the market women of the intention to demolish the structure before the Christmas festivities but following persistent pleas from the women, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) postponed the exercise until after the yuletide.
The KMA Chief Executive, Mr Osei-Assibey Antwi, had in the past, called for the demolition of the structure because of its dilapidated nature.
The Consultant for the project, Mr Emmanuel Danso, said the contractor would commence work as soon as the demolition was done.
The project is funded by the United Kingdom (UK) government.
