The Director Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research (FAAR), Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Professor Kwesi Aning, has admonished the John Mahama-led government to make public the identity of those responsible for the covert stash of counterfeit money and suspected gold bars found in Sapeiman once investigations are concluded.
The Security analyst explained that revealing the identities of culprits would bolster public confidence in the government and deter others from engaging in similar crimes.
On Sunday, February 9, 2025, National Security Operatives acting on a tip-off intercepted a large quantity of money, including counterfeit US dollars and Ghanaian cedi notes, along with boxes of suspected gold bars. The illicit items were hidden inside twelve 20-foot shipping containers.
The National Security Operatives raided the warehouse in Sapeiman, where the discovery was made.
Commenting on the issue, the Director Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research-KAIPTC said he is of high hope that the perpetrators can be easily traced.
“It is easy to find those who are involved. They pick up some laptops, they pick up some smartphones—who are these people? Who are their family members and friends? Where do they do their banking? How did the goods come in? So it manifests, people are very quickly arrested and placed before the court of competent jurisdiction, and when they are punished for the public to be made aware, it serves as a deterrent,” he stated in an interview with the media.
