The Eastern Regional Programme Head of Social Welfare at the Department of Child and Family Welfare, Isaac Koramoah Asante, has disclosed that the Children’s Act 560 (1998) mandates the Social Welfare to arrest any child found outside after eight in the evening.

Hence, he urged parents to be responsible for their children by ensuring they are always home by 8 p.m., rather than left to roam the streets at night.

Mr. Koramoah, who was speaking on GBC Sunrise FM’s Development Agenda, commended the New Juaben South Municipality for designating one of its offices at Nyamekrom for the Social Welfare to use as shelter for keeping children who are found roaming in town after eight in the evening.

He highlighted the mandate of the Social Welfare Institution, which includes; the Child and Family Welfare, Justice Administration and Community Welfare.

”Social Welfare takes care of the less privileged and the disabled in society through funds provided by the government.”

Neglecting children

Mr. Asante spoke of the consequences of child neglect and said, parental responsibility cannot be taken for granted.

The New Juaben South Unit Head of the Social Welfare, Michael Asante, said, ”social welfare ensures that any man who neglects his responsibility of catering for his child is compelled to do so through legal means.”
