US-based Philanthropist and Medical Practitioner, Dr. Kofi Kyei Sarfo and his family have donated assorted food items and drinks to the Weija Leprosarium in Accra to help feed the inmates.
Dr. Sarfo who came down to celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities in the Country, also donated five thousand dollars cash to the Leprosarium. The money and food items were received on behalf of the home by the Founder of the Lepers Aid Committee, Rev. Father Andrew Campbell.
Dr. Kofi Kyei Sarfo had earlier distributed 750 packaged foods to children at Ankaase, where he hails from, in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region. Dr. Sarfo, who is the Medical Director at the Vista Medical Associates in Las Vegas, Nevada, said he decided to embark on his philanthropic journey to put smiles on the faces of the needy and the vulnerable in society.
He said community welfare remains a priority to him and his family, adding that they had earlier donated 50 sets of classroom furniture to schools In Ankaase and will hopefully put up a community school for the poor shortly.
Dr Kofi Kyei Sarfo said he was motivated to donate to the Weija Leprosarium because he realized Father Campbell is doing a good job in integrating cured lepers into the society and there is a need to support him to give the vulnerable a message of hope and love.
“He’s doing a human job and he can’t do this by himself. He needs the support of all of us, every Ghanaian, no matter how small you can give, no matter how little your donation is, your widow might, it goes a long way to make their life better. That is why we decided to come here to give them support and also to give them message of hope and love.”
Dr. Sarfo, added “The job cannot be done by one person. Pastor Campbell has done a lot. He has devoted about 15 years of his life doing this all by himself. It’s time for us to support him. Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians in the diaspora and even those living here. It’s time for all of us to chip in and support Pastor Campbell so that he can give a more dignified life to the residents here”
Two of Dr. Kofi Sarfo’s Children, Akosua Sarfo and Nana Beema Sarfo encouraged more donations to the home to help the inmates. They encouraged persons experiencing challenges to be inspired by the resilience of the cured lepers.
“You can see that they are very brave. They are very resilient. I mean, despite all the difficulties that they are going through, their disabilities and everything, they still continue to enjoy life. Some of them are planting crops, like maize and other things, and it inspires”
Founder of Lepers Aid Committee and Former Parish Priest of the Christ the King Church in Accra, Rev. Father Andrew Campbell said there is fulfilment in giving.
The more you give, the more you get. The happiest people today are not the people with money. It’s not money. It’s contentment, fulfilment. You saw the little girl that came back from Italy. She’s so happy. She’s such a happy little girl. And when she’s happy, then I’m happy. When we help somebody, we all feel that happiness that we want to do more and more.”
