Former President John Mahama has blamed the Electoral Commission for the challenges associated with the Limited Voter Registration Exercise.

He said the congestion and the slow process of the registration due to network challenges could have been resolved if the Commission had heeded to calls to expand the registration centers.

Mr. Mahama who toured the Registration Centre at the old EC Office in Accra as well as La and Adentan EC District Offices, did not understand why the Electoral Commission, despite its experience in registration, chose to use only one network for the exercise.

He also faulted the National Identification Authority, NIA for not making available Ghana Cards that would have allowed for easy registration.

The Electoral Commission on Monday, September 11, 2023, began registration of new eligible voters onto the National Register.

Despite calls for the exercise to be spread in all the Electoral Areas across the country, the Commission limited it to only District Offices. Several complaints have been made with some centers recording network failures. This, former President Mahama, during his visits, said could have been avoided if the EC had expanded the centers.

Mr. Mahama said the NIA must up its game by ensuring a swift process of issuing the Ghana Cards

Some newcomers onto the Voters Register shared their frustrations.

MP for Ayawaso North Yussuf, Jaja also spoke about the challenges his Constituents are encountering.

The exercise is expected to end on October 11, 2023
