President John Mahama has directed the Chief of Staff to hold an emergency meeting with key players in the energy sector to address Ghana’s looming power crisis, popularly known as ‘dumsor’.
The meeting, scheduled for today at 10 a.m., will include major stakeholders such as GRIDCo, WAPCo, VRA, GNPC, and BOST. The goal is to find immediate solutions to the ongoing fuel supply challenges affecting power generation.
The Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu and former Deputy Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor revealed this during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, January 8.
He explained that the current fuel stock levels for power plants are critically low. For example:
AKSA has only 225m³ of fuel, enough for five hours of operation at 120 megawatts.
KTPP has 1,275m³, which can last just one and a half days.
Cenpower has 293,000m³, sufficient for about 20.9 days of continuous operation.
Jinapor also highlighted that the Asogli power plant has completely run out of fuel and even if fuel arrives, it will require treatment before use.
He assured Ghanaians that extensive technical assessments have already been conducted, and multiple solutions will be discussed during the meeting. President Mahama is expected to be briefed on the outcomes and will provide further instructions to address the crisis.
The emergency meeting comes amid growing public concern over the return of persistent power outages, which have previously caused significant disruptions to businesses and daily life.
