President John Dramani Mahama has affirmed his government’s dedication to revitalizing the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region, with the goal of establishing the region as Ghana’s primary sugar producer.

Speaking at a “Thank You” rally in Cape Coast, President Mahama assured that the project would proceed to benefit the people of the Central Region. “We are determined to proceed and continue with that project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana” Mr. Mahama stated.

The factory has over the years faced challenges, including raw material shortages over. The previous government secured a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank, along with an additional $24 million investment, to revamp the factory. Despite efforts, including test runs, full operations have been hindered.

In response to these challenges, President Mahama has directed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to provide an update on the factory’s status to facilitate the necessary actions.

He also expressed his government’s commitment to supporting farmers in the region through improved irrigation and modernized agricultural policies.
