The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to pass the Property Rights of Spouses Bill if elected in the upcoming December elections.

He emphasised that the bill is vital in securing the rights of women in marriage, ensuring that they are treated fairly in matters related to property distribution.

Speaking at the launch of the NDC Women’s Manifesto on September 30, Mr. Mahama stated, “Marriage is a union, and in the unfortunate event of separation, assets such as buildings and farmland must be shared equitably. No man should have the power to evict a woman without granting her a fair share of what was acquired during the marriage.”

In addition to the Property Rights Bill, Mahama also unveiled plans for a Domestic Workers Bill aimed at protecting vulnerable workers, most of whom are women, from exploitation and abuse.

He further explained that this law will ensure that those who mistreat domestic workers are held accountable. “Too often, domestic workers are subjected to abuse, underfeeding, and neglect. This legislation will provide the necessary protections to put an end to such exploitation,” he added.

Mahama concluded by underscoring the NDC’s commitment to social justice and the protection of vulnerable groups, noting that these laws will be enforced to safeguard the rights and dignity of women across Ghana.
