Private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has admitted that his earlier vow to leave Ghana if John Dramani Mahama won the 2024 presidential election was a political gimmick.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Mr. Ampaw congratulated President Mahama on his electoral victory, describing it as a testament to hard work.
He acknowledged his active support for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia during the campaign and admitted making statements against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to rally support for his preferred candidate.
“I have to make a confession, and that’s really a congratulation to John Mahama. He has worked so hard, and NDC has won,” he said.
Mr. Ampaw, who previously declared on Angel FM that he would relocate to neighbouring Togo if Mahama became president, dismissed his statement as part of the political game.
“For me to say I will leave to Togo—it was a political gimmick to ginger the public,” he explained. “As I sit here, I don’t even have a passport. I’ve never travelled before. I’ve been in Ghana for the past 57 years of my life.”
The outspoken lawyer added that he had no regrets about making the remarks, stating that they were part of his strategy during the campaign period. He concluded by acknowledging Mahama’s leadership, saying, “Mahama has proved to me that everything is possible.”
