Convener of the Media Coalition against Galamsey, Dr. Ken Ashigbey has lauded the directive by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for Akonta Mining Limited to halt mining operations in the Nimri Tano Forest reserve in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.
Dr. Ashigbey further called for prosecution of persons involved, to serve as deterrent especially as evidence abound in the case. He said the media has a role to play in all this.
Dr. Ashigbey spoke on news and current affairs programme ‘Behind the News’ on Uniiq FM.
Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Jinapor, contributing to programme said the mine which is owned by NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi, is a dent on President Akufo-Addo’s fight against illegal mining.
He said the case is a test for the President’s commitment to the fight against galamsey.
Mr. Jinapor said the minority will follow through the case to ensure justice is served.
