Melcom Group of Companies has begun a nationwide blood donation exercise to support the National Blood Bank as part of its annual corporate social responsibility initiative.
The exercise, being held in all 16 regions of Ghana and at about 27 Melcom shops, is expected to help raise and make available thousands of pints of blood at designated health facilities nationwide.
At the brief opening ceremony in Accra, the Director of Communications of Melcom, Godwin Avenorgbo, said they made the decision a very long time ago.
“As a good corporate citizen, our contribution to national development must be of necessity to the benefit of all and sundry; that’s why we have created two pillars for our CSR to facilitate our service delivery, namely: education and health.”
On this occasion, the group has received the support of the National Blood Service and the Graphic Clinic to bleed as many pints of blood as possible for storage in all well-equipped hospitals in Ghana.
Mr Abenorgbo appealed to all to donate a pint of blood to save a life by visiting any Melcom Shop. “Fellow Ghanaians, come out in your numbers to donate urgently needed blood for transfusion in our hospitals. People need this to save their lives.”
As part of its commitment to create jobs and more opportunities for Ghanaians, Melcom will, by the end of the year, open new shops, and Godwin Abenirgbo mentioned that “we will start the operation of our Melcom Mini Brand with new shops in Community 25 and the Airport Residential Area.
These investments have generated many jobs directly and indirectly, so today there’s a Melcom Shop in each of the 16 regions of Ghana. Therefore, this year’s blood donation exercise is being held in all regions of Ghana to give all well-meaning people a chance to give in favour of health care delivery.
