Members of Parliament must deploy a common-sense approach - Prof. Kwabena Kantankah

By Regina Kwapong

In a recent call to action, Professor Kwabena Sarfo Sarfo-Kantankah, a distinguished Parliamentary discourse analyst, has appealed to members of parliament to approach the ongoing vacant seat controversy with a practical and “common sense” perspective. This plea comes amidst growing discussions and debates surrounding the unresolved issue of vacant parliamentary seats.

“I call on the members of parliament to use a common-sense approach. Even in law there is always a common-sense approach and it normally comes to play when you want to consider the public interest policy”, he made these statements during a phone call interview on the GTV’s Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 23, 2024.

Additionally, he expressed that, as Ghana continues to evolve its democratic principles, its citizens will inevitably encounter various challenges. These challenges serve as stepping stones for the country to enhance and refine its legal framework, ultimately contributing to the development and strengthening of its laws.

Prof. Kwabena also emphasized the importance of bringing conflicts to a resolution within a defined timeframe to enable the smooth functioning of parliament. He underscored that in the process of resolving conflict issues, the decisions made by the Supreme Court stand as the ultimate and unchangeable verdict, defining the finality of legal disputes in Ghana’s judicial system.
