The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked all mining licences granted after December 7, 2024, as part of efforts to curb illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

The move seeks to address environmental damage caused by unauthorized mining, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies.

Speaking at a press briefing on sector policies and programmes, Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah revealed that seven out of nine forest reserves impacted by illegal mining have been successfully restored.

He stated that the decision followed recommendations from key regulatory bodies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, the Forestry Commission, and the Water Resources Commission.

“Following careful assessment, we are proceeding with the revocation of all small-scale mining licences issued from December 7. These licences were granted in haste, without due process,” he said.

Mr. Buah added that affected individuals could appeal the decision to ensure proper procedures are followed.
