Volta Regional Minister visits injured PE Coordinator following Sokode Tsawenu accident

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, on Monday, April 14, 2025, visited the Ho Teaching Hospital to commiserate with the Regional Physical Education (PE) Coordinator, Mr. Roger Kwaku Tay, and other victims in a road accident at Sokode Tsawenu over the weekend.

The accident involved a delegation of Senior High School students en route to Accra for the 2023 National Sports Festival. While several students and officials sustained injuries, authorities confirmed no fatalities.

Mr. Tay, who suffered a fractured arm, successfully underwent surgery with an implant and is in stable condition.

During the visit, the Regional Minister, accompanied by a team from the Volta Regional Education Directorate, led by the Regional Director, Francis Agbemadi, presented an undisclosed cash donation to Mr. Tay to aid his recovery.

In a gesture of benevolence and solidarity, Mr. Gunu also donated GH₵1,000 each to seven other accident victims receiving treatment in the same ward.

Mr. Gunu, who praised the resilience of the sports contingent,s was grateful for their survival in the accident.

“We are grateful to God for sparing their lives and commend the medical team for their swift response,” he stated.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and National Ambulance Service have launched investigations into the cause of the accident, and the other injured students have been discharged.

The annual National Sports Festival brings together second-cycle institutions nationwide to promote talent development and unity.

The Volta Region has consistently been ranked among the top contenders in the competition.
