The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is to fly seventy-four Ghanaians trapped in Sudan to Accra tomorrow, May 2, 20
They successfully crossed over to the Sudan Ethiopia border with the assistance of officials of Ghana’s Embassy in Ethiopia.
Additionally, one Footballer and two Engineers have been assisted by officials of the Ghana Embassy in Egypt to-cross over the Egyptian border post of Wadi Halffi, north of Sudan, while two other footballers are going through immigration formalities.
In the past weeks, Sudan has been gripped by a deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The Sudanese capital Khartoum, has been the epicentre of clashes, with civilians being most affected.
The Ministry has reiterated its commitment to evacuate all willing Ghanaian nationals in Sudan to safety to neighbouring countries, such as Ethiopia and Egypt.
Meanwhile, BBC reports that fighting has intensified in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, shattering the latest ceasefire aimed at allowing people to flee to safety. Today, the army said it is attacking the city from all directions, with air strikes and heavy artillery, to flush out its paramilitary rivals. The latest truce was due to end late on Sunday.
Millions of people remain trapped in the capital, where food is running short.
For all the army’s superior firepower, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are highly mobile and more suited to urban warfare.
Meanwhile, there are chaotic scenes in Port Sudan where people are desperate to board ships, some of which are heading to Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
