Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum says the Ministry is working hard to ensure that newly built schools in the country are provided proper Sanitary Facilities.
Dr. Adutwum said learning outcomes cannot be improved without a conducive and proper sanitary environment.
He commended the Media Coalition against Open Defaecation, (M-CODE), for its advocacy role to end the menace of poor environmental sanitation in schools and in the society.
He pledged the Ministry’s support for M-code’s activities.
Dr. Adutwum was speaking at a National Synposium on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene organised by the Media Coalition against open Daefecation in Accra.
The symposium was to enlighten the public on the state of Water Sanitation and hygiene in schools.
A panel discussion on issues relating to the poor state of Sanitation in schools suggested remedies that will help overcome challenges in schools and the country as a whole.
The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum said if schools lack ‘WASH’ facilities, it reduces productivity.
He however, indicated that schools with these facilities must orient their staff and students on the best way to maintain them.
Deputy Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Patrick Buamah said government will continue to invest in the ‘WASH’ sector.
He charged MMDCEs to be strict on the bye-laws against the practice of open defaecation.
The Programs Coordinator for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, (GAMA), George Asiedu urged all stakeholders to support the operation and maintenance of school WASH facilities.
