Morocco’s Health Minister visits Ghana to foster healthcare collaboration

Minister for Health and Social Protection of Morocco, Mr. Amine Tahraoui, recently visited Ghana’s Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to exchange knowledge and experiences aimed at enhancing healthcare systems in both nations.

During their meeting, Mr. Amine pointed out notable similarities between the health sectors of Morocco and Ghana, particularly in healthcare infrastructure, human resource development, advancements in pharmaceuticals, and the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). 

He stressed the importance of providing quality and accessible healthcare to all citizens, despite the obstacles both countries face.

Mr. Amine highlighted Morocco’s achievements in healthcare, stating that the nation has attained 70% health insurance coverage and is striving to reach full coverage in the near future. 

He emphasized the need for investment in healthcare systems and expressed a desire to collaborate with the Ghanaian government to train and integrate some of Ghana’s healthcare personnel, promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building.

In response, Honourable Akandoh welcomed the Moroccan Health Minister’s visit and praised Morocco’s healthcare advancements. He reiterated Ghana’s dedication to enhancing its healthcare system through strategic partnerships and the sharing of best practices. 

Mr. Akandoh mentioned Ghana’s progress in expanding healthcare access, improving medical training, and boosting pharmaceutical production while recognizing the challenges in achieving complete UHC.

He also expressed Ghana’s interest in learning from Morocco’s experience in health insurance expansion and workforce development. Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of collaboration in areas such as medical training, infrastructure improvement, and pharmaceutical manufacturing to enhance healthcare delivery in both countries.

Both ministers expressed hope for future collaborations that would yield mutual benefits in healthcare development. They agreed to identify specific areas for cooperation, including training programs for medical professionals, initiatives for knowledge sharing, and potential investments in Ghana’s health sector.
