On GTV’s Breakfast Show, lawyer Morris Ampaw shed light on the challenges surrounding property rights, wills, and intestate succession in Ghana. His discussion highlighted a recurring issue: the lack of evidence when proving financial contributions to joint property.

Lawyer Ampaw explained that many women contribute to property acquisition informally, often giving money to their husbands without documentation. In cases of divorce, this leaves them vulnerable, as courts rely on evidence like receipts or written agreements. Without proof, a spouse’s verbal claims hold little weight in legal proceedings.

He stressed the importance of documentation, stating, “The rule of the game is evidence.” Ampaw also touched on the concept of joint property, where assets are shared based on each party’s contributions. However, societal norms often disadvantage women, making it harder for them to assert their rights.
He urged individuals to prioritize documentation whether through receipts, bank statements, or written agreements to protect their interests.

Through personal anecdotes and legal insights, he emphasized the need for awareness and proper record-keeping to protect one’s interests in property matters. His advice serves as a wake-up call for individuals to take proactive steps in safeguarding their contributions and inheritance rights.
