The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has started an exercise to dredge all major drains across the Ashanti Region.

The Regional NADMO Coordinator, Kwabena Nsenkyire, told the media in Kumasi that the exercise was to help clear the drains, which was causing the perennial flooding with accompanying fatalities during heavy rains.

He confirmed that the bodies of Kofi Appiagyei, an auto-mechanic, and Shamsiya Mohammed, an eight-year old pupil, who got drowned following two days of devastating rainstorm, have been recovered at Atonsu and Tafo Adonpom, respectively.

The bodies were found afloat at the said flooded areas, on Tuesday evening after the rains.

They had since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue for autopsy.

Mr. Nsenkyire said the heavy downpour also left in its wake the huge destruction of property worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis.

The incident, he said, had rendered scores of residents homeless, especially those whose houses were sited on water courses, adding that the Organization was mobilizing the needed relief items to support them.

Mr. Nsenkyire hinted that his outfit was putting in the necessary measures to deal with any emergencies as the rains set in.
