A steel bridge linking Navio and Mayoro to Sirigu in the Kasena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region has collapsed.

It is believed that a trailer with registration number AW 8894 – 12 was crossing from Sirigu to Navio through to Paga before the incident happened. According to some residents, the incident happened between 4.30am to 5.00am on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

The trailer was carrying wood chopped into pieces that is suspected to be rosewood. The suspected rosewood that filled the trailer might have increased its weight weakening the narrow steel bridge.

Residents say the collapse of the bridge means that workers, farmers and business partners would be cut off from accessing Paga or Bolgatanga markets especially when the rains set in.

Assembly Member for the Navio Electoral Area, Mr. Roland Apugido expressed fear that the situation would be worse for commuters on that road when the rains begin.

He mentioned that the bridge had developed some cracks and needed some maintenance. He said several calls at the District Assembly for the rehabilitation of the bridge have not yielded any positive results.

The driver of the trailer and his two passengers sustained some injuries but have been treated and discharged from the Paga District Hospital.
