Former Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), President, Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere has called for a re-composition of the National Media Commission (NMC).

He said instead of an 18-member body that meets periodically, the number should be reduced to operate full-time to meet the demands of the times. Ambassador Blay Amihere was speaking at the 75th GJA anniversary public lecture held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi.

Ambassador Blay Amihere wondered whether the 18 National Media Commission (NMC) members, who work on a part-time basis, are best suited to meeting the goals for which it was established. In his view, today’s expanded media landscape of over 500 radio stations, dozens of television stations, and social media requires 24/7 attention from the Commission.

The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, emphasised the need to invest in media content production.

Vice President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Linda Asante Agyei, outlined some novelties introduced by the Association to benefit student journalists.

The 75th GJA anniversary public lecture, which is the first of its kind, was to honour past leaders and forge ahead for professional Journalism standards.
