The Northern Regional Security Council has banned commercial sex activities in the Tamale Metropolis as part of efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
The move comes in the wake of suspicions, that the Guinean Nationals who tested positive for the virus and are under quarantine in Tamale are commercial sex workers.
The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saed at a Press briefing in Tamale yesterday (April 1), said investigations so far, suggest, that eight of the Guineans are prostitutes.
He warned the public against patronizing commerical sex workers as they pose a danger to them and the public.
The Minister also revealed, that a taskforce set up to enforce compliance to COVID-19 protocols, will enforce the ban on prostitution in the Tamale Metropolis.
There are quite a number of commercial sex workers from the West African sub-region operating in Tamale.
Authorities in the conservative, largely Muslim region, have tried many times in the past to stop commercial sex activities, with little success.
A few months ago, authorities from the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly arrested and repatriated some Nigerian women alleged to have been involved in commercial sex.
