On September 15, 2023, the Volta River Authority (VRA) made the critical decision to release water from the Akosombo Dam to prevent it from overflowing, a move deemed necessary to avert potentially catastrophic consequences.

However, this action has led to widespread flooding, displacing thousands of residents in the affected areas.

Speaking at a public hearing on the Akosombo dam spillage, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament, criticized the government’s failure to utilize the Saglemi housing project as a temporary shelter for those displaced by the flooding.

Ablakwa emphasized that had the government acted swiftly, the victims could have been moved to Saglemi, providing them with much-needed relief during this crisis.
