Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister for Works and Housing, has reiterated the government’s determination to provide decent accommodation for the various security agencies in the country.

He said the provision of decent accommodation would not only ensure the safety of personnel who were entrusted to protect the citizens of the country but would also increase the productivity of these personnel in the discharge of their duties.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah, was speaking at the inauguration of 26 staff housing units for the Ghana Immigration Services (GIS) at Apatrapa in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region.

The units of two- and four-bedroom apartments are at the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Estates.

The Minister stressed the importance of decent accommodation for Ghanaians and said that would help promote the dignity of the individual.

He indicated that currently Ghana was facing a housing deficit of 1.8 million units, and that the Government was diligently working to address the issue by providing housing solutions to the people.

The minister emphasized that housing was one of the most important aspects of the national discourse, but unfortunately, most people do not spend much time on it.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the Government was actively working to revitalize abandoned housing projects such as the J. A. Kufuor Estates Project in Kumasi and the Sagleme Project in Accra.

According to him, the Ministry of Works and Housing was engaging stakeholders to complete an incentive package, which would be used to stimulate the quick development of housing to reduce the 1.8 million housing deficit in Ghana within the span of 10 years.

He also mentioned that the Ministry would soon roll out a district housing programme across the 261 districts in Ghana.

This, he said, would make use of local building materials so that the final products could be very affordable.
