The Deputy General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, ICU, in charge of Operations, Morgan Ayawini, says salaries in the Public Sector have been nothing to write home about for years.
He said it is time Organised Labour set up to front for decent salary packages for Ghanaian workers that will properly cater for their needs instead of the constant fight for a “minimum wage”, that only serves the parochial interest of few people in society.
Speaking in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana in Accra, Mr. Ayawini said Organised Labour is partly to blame for the precarious salary situation Ghanaian workers find themselves in.
The Deputy General Secretary called for an end to the feet-dragging on the part of Organised Labour to ensure a decent and proper living wage for the Ghanaian worker.
In a related development, the ICU has been training some of its members on alternative income sources.
Selected women have been undergoing training in soap and beads making as a means of supplementing their income.
Supported by the global trade confederacy, “the FNV Mondinal”, the training was co-ordinated by the head of the gender desk at ICU, Christine Asante.
