Organized labour calls on President Akufo-Addo to help out with “dumsor”

Ghana’s Organised Labour has called on President Akufo-Addo to find solutions to the erratic power supply widely known as “Dumsor” as its persistence affects their activities and the economy at large. 

The concern was part of several issues raised by Organized Labour during the 2024 May Day celebration in Accra, on the theme; Election 2024: The Role of Workers And Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development.

The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah in his address raised several issues affecting Organized Labour’s activities which he called for urgent attention and solutions to them.

He said, the government must ensure the rectification of Convention 190 of the International Labour Organization concerning violence and harassment at work. 

“I would like to bring to the attention of our President that Organised Labour we are concerned about a number of things. The first one has to do with the International Labour Organization Convention 190 concerning violence and harassment at work. We believe that Ghana can rectify Convention 190 now”, he said.

Dr. Baah further stated that the second concern to the government has to do with the unstable power supply popularly known as “dumsor” which is affecting their work. He said Ghanaians can not experience the bad days of dumsor and that, an urgent solution to the problem is required. 

He noted that the country has come a long way to continue to experience an unstable power supply.

“ My second appeal is, Mr. President, it is regrettable that the people of Ghana will have to experience dumsor again after all that we went through in the past. Please do something about dumsor now”, he emphasized.

Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah however commended the government’s effort toward the review of the labour law which he believes will help the labour union to execute their mandates proficiently.

Dr. Baah again urged the President to ensure limitation in imported goods while encouraging the consumption of locally produced goods, adding, that could be the only means to stabilize the cedi.

He further prayed for peace before, during, and after the 2024 general election and called on all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful environment in the lead-up to the general election.
