The Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Major General Richard Addo Gyane, has called on election observers to uphold vigilance, fairness, and transparency in Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the opening of a 3-day training program for election observers, he emphasised that the credibility of Ghana’s democracy hinges on the integrity of its electoral process.

“It is my singular honour to warmly welcome you all to this significant training program,” Major General Gyane stated. “As guardians of our democracy, your roles extend beyond technicalities. This is about cultivating a culture of peace, transparency, and accountability in our electoral system.”

These remarks were made on his behalf during a training session organised in collaboration with the KAIPTC’s Women, Youth, Peace, and Security Institute, the Foundation for Security Development in Africa, and the African Women Leaders Network, Ghana chapter. The initiative, supported by the Government of Sweden, reflects a deep commitment to good governance, peace, and security in Ghana and across Africa.

As Ghana prepares for its elections, the commandant emphasised the importance of empowering women and youth in the political space, highlighting their crucial roles in promoting stability and inclusive governance.

“By empowering women and youth, we empower our democracy,” he noted, stressing that these often- marginalised groups represent a significant part of Ghana’s population and hold the key to the nation’s future.

He encouraged the observers to approach their responsibilities with impartiality, noting that their vigilance could deter violence, prevent fraud, and inspire public trust in the election results.

“A peaceful election is not merely the responsibility of political leaders or the Electoral Commission; it is a collective endeavour,” Major General Gyane added. He praised the Government of Sweden for its continued support of sustainable peace initiatives in Africa, underscoring the program’s goal of building a more inclusive and peaceful Ghana for future generations.

As election day draws near, the KAIPTC’s training initiative aims to ensure a transparent and credible process, positioning Ghana once again as a model of democracy in Africa.
